Cooking Classes at the Star Center

Posted: March 4th, 2013

The Metro Parks Tacoma website describes The Star Center as “a 32,000 square foot facility that includes a gym, hall for rentals, a new music and dance studio, a demonstration kitchen, and dynamic indoor/outdoor children’s playground with an adjacent party rental space.” It is a community center part of Metro Parks Tacoma. The Star Center is located at 3873 South 66th Street Tacoma, WA 98409.

The Star Center is offering a few cooking classes:

Monday, March 18, 2013 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm there will be a “Healthy and Simple Cooking Ideas” class for those that are age 18 and older. In this class, you will learn to make simple and classic recipes in a much healthier way.  Laurie Larson, instructor of the course, will demonstrate how to make turkey loaf, quinoa salad, and black bean brownies.  The class is $22 for Star Pass members, $25 for Tacoma residents, and $27 for non-residents.

Ellie Eckroth, fitness coordinator for the Star Center, informed us that recently the Star Center also offered a gluten and dairy free class. Ellie stated: “We’ll be doing a cooking class at least once a month or every couple months. The public really enjoys these classes. We have similar classes each month with different recipes that are dairy and gluten free. A lot of them are vegetarian recipes.”

Ellie commented: “I think it’s a great class; not those that are looking to lose weight, but to change their lifestyle. Most recipes people will find will be classic recipes modified with lower fat ingredients and although most people find them to be weird or not appetizing, most taste exactly the same.

Ron taught decadent desserts, Italian cooking, and cooking for one. The public also wants international cuisines and will continue on with the following cooking classes: Asian, Spanish, etc.”

Italian Cooking will be offered Monday, March 25, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm. This class is for those that are aged 18 and older. This is a class to attend if you love Italian food. Traditional recipes will be taught at this course, as well as tricks of the trade, while having the opportunity to enjoy samples. Ron Rzewnicki, wine/beer specialist at Top Foods, will be teaching the course. The class is $20 for Star Pass members, $24 for Tacoma residents, and $26 for non-Tacoma residents.

Pairing and Small Bites course will be offered on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This class is for those that are aged 21 and older. This class teaches appetizers to impress, learn how to make four basic appetizers that will pair well with wine. The class is $18 for Star Pass members, $20 for Tacoma residents, and $22 for non-Tacoma residents.

Those that are interested can register for these classes by calling the Star Center at:
(253) 404-3939 or visiting: StarCenterTacoma.org. Although there are no deadlines for the classes, classes fill up quickly, so please register soon. Ellie informed us that each class approximately 8 to 12 students and that there are commercial grade kitchens (similar to those used in restaurants) and the TV monitors so that students can see what’s going on in a big class.

Ellie also features a low fat and low calorie recipe per month at: http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/cooking-nutrition/.

    Ellie,
I was wondering if you’ll be using eggs or dairy in the class? I’m trying to find a Vegan cooking class in the area and haven’t had much luck.
