“The Attic” is located in the upstairs of the War Memorial Center located at 601 N. Meridian Puyallup, WA 98371. The Attic is intended for 13 to 18 year olds to enjoy a safe and fun environment from 6 pm to 10 pm the first Friday of every month. Ashley Frelin recreation specialist for the City of Puyallup, informed us that the attic has “fun colors and everything matches like IKEA.” She discussed how there were couches and a large movie screen for teens to play Wii and have movie night. There is an open gym for teens to play basketball as well as acoustic nights. The attic is free, unless there is a band, special guest, or feature.
“In October we had ‘Rocktober Fest’ where we had four different bands come and play…that was pretty cool. We have ‘Battle of the Bands’ in spring,” Ashley commented. A majority of the time the attic has free coffee and popcorn, and soda and water for purchase. Ashley explained the origin of the attic, “I came up with it; we were trying to find a way and you think teen late night and teens go to the YMCA. I originally was trying to think of college-aged students, but then shifted to teens because most college kids go to bars or a comedy club. I was thinking, what about a ‘coffee house vibe’ for teens to play the Wii, and bring their guitar, or have a band play. Hanging out, that’s what teens like to do and talk on their phones.”
When asked the best thing about the attic, Ashley replied, “It’s something for teens to do so that they’re not on their phone or getting into mischief a guaranteed place for them to go at least once a month and it’s not like there are adults here, for example, a 50-year old mom dad figure; we’re in our mid 20’s so we’re fairly up with the times. Us staff at the attic are somewhat young.”
Ashley added about what many people may not know about the attic, “That it is up to date. You’re not gonna play Monopoly and Guitar Hero. It’s not an already played that, ‘been there done that.’ We have coffee popcorn, Wii tournaments, and the furniture matches. It’s a cool place and it actually looks cool up there.”
What’s unique about the attic, “It’s a different theme every time, for example: movie night, BBQ night, we try to keep it rotating with the same basic stuff available, popcorn and coffee, and an open gym to play basketball.”
Teens from surrounding cities are welcome to come as well. Ashley recommends any teens, “They don’t have to be from Puyallup, they can be from Tacoma and Seattle; so please do come,” she said.
