Tour De Pierce is a community bike ride sponsored by Pierce County Parks and Recreation. Tour De Pierce began as a way to promote helmet safety and safe bicycle riding. In the 1990’s the proceeds helped support an educational program call “Sprocketwoman.” She did presentations all over Pierce County during the course of 9 years, about bicycle safety, rules of the road, and promoting the importance of wearing a helmet. Nearly 60,000 elementary school children viewed her presentations. Cara Cross, recreation supervisor for Pierce County Parks and Recreation explained, “The ride promotes safe bicycling and becoming active.”
The event registration is open to the public, and although some people love the competition, this is more of a community focused event. As such, all skill and speed levels are encouraged to participate. The ride has 3 distance options available; 12, 30 and 50 miles in length. There is a pre-registration discount, if participants register by tomorrow, June 26th.
Cara commented on the Tour De Pierce: “We have many people who ride who are training for the Seattle to Portland or a number of other longer/larger rides. But, my favorite thing to hear is that this is a family or individuals first time doing an organized ride, and they do the 12 mile and say they are looking forward to next year to do the 30 mile route.”
All fitness and ability levels are encouraged to participate, especially first time participants, families and groups that want to be more involved with bike riding or cycling.
The course is marked with ‘Dan Henry’ symbols, using spray chalk that washes away in 2-3 weeks. They hope for good weather 10 days in advance so the marks will still be visible to riders. Marking the course is time consuming, usually taking 15-20 hours to complete, and done over the week before the event.
Tour De Pierce takes place this Sunday, June 30, 2013 and ride times can be between 7:30 am and 11:30 am at the Staging area of the Washington State Fairgrounds Gold Parking Lot located at South Meridian & 9th Avenue SE in Puyallup.
Pre-registration is available through tomorrow, June 26th. $14 per person or $42 for a family of 4. Day-of registration is $18 per person or $54 for a family of 4. There is a limited supply of shirts available day of for $20. Online registration can be done on the website: http://www.piercecountywa.org/index.aspx?NID=2317
