68th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting

Pantages Theater in Tacoma will have their 68th annual holiday tree lighting on Saturday, November 30, at 5:30 pm, in the Broadway Center for Performing Arts. The tree lighting is a free community event, open to the public, but takes place immediately after the ticketed Sing-a-long-a-Grease show, an interactive screening of the classic film musical. David Fischer, Executive Director, Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, explained details of the event, “This community event marks the beginning of the holiday season. Taking place at the corner of 9th and Broadway, the evening also includes complimentary cider and an appearance by Santa in the Pantages lobby. The tree itself is more than forty feet tall, and is a donation from Joint Base Lewis McChord. “

David Fischer gave us some history of the Tree Lighting and community use of the corner, “The corner of 9th and Broadway has been a place for Tacoma residents to congregate on monumental occasions for decades. Beginning with celebrations to mark the end of World War II, this spot has served as a significant place in Tacoma’s psyche.  The first tree lighting was in 1945, when the event helped returning soldiers to connect and celebrate with a grateful civilian population. Ever since then, the tree lighting has served as a traditional gathering for the community to come together to celebrate and give thanks. Everyone is welcome! The Holiday Tree lighting is a great post-Thanksgiving event for families to enjoy together; it’s also a great opportunity for people to experience their community and connect with their neighbors. Later in the season, the Broadway Center partners with a local synagogue to honor Chanukah on the same corner.” David said that he truly loves the holiday atmosphere of the tree lighting as a kick-off of the holiday season.

“[The symbolism of this event] It’s all about gratitude . . . first by the soldiers to Tacoma, then by Tacoma to the soldiers, and now gratitude from the Broadway Center to Tacoma residents for the great support.”

This event will be held at Pantages Theater Lobby 901 Broadway Tacoma, WA, November 30, at 5:30 pm
