Saturday, September 7, the 9th annual Women of Color Health Awareness Conference will be held at the Star Center Metro Parks, in Tacoma, Washington, from 9am to 3pm. The event is free and includes a continental breakfast and a catered luncheon.
Cathy J. Bailey, vice president of the Bethlehem Baptist Church Ministry, explained: “The purpose of the event is to empower women to become the role model for healthy lifestyles in their family. The event started out in October, with the focus on breast health. The history is that it began with the vision of Karol Brown as an outreach from the church to service the community, with many local community sponsors who remain with us today. Over the years we decided to expand to Health Awareness while maintaining support for breast health. As the First Lady Michelle Obama chose childhood obesity as her “platform” we took her lead and last year our theme was: First Lady of Health as we, women, our the first ladies in our households and primarily prepare meals for our families.”
The conference changed their dates from previous years, being held in October, because October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, every weekend there are numerous events within the community. The conference moved to September, as parents and kids prepare for a new school year, to assist them in finding more healthy habits and changes to help kick off the new school year in a more positive and healthful fashion. What better way to “kick” off the event with exciting way to support better nutrition and physical activity for all?
A new segment of the conference this year is the Sisters Supporting Sisters” Women of Color Breast Cancer Screening Day, at the Carol Milgard Breast Center. It is an opportunity for women to positively support each other in an important screening that may save lives. Participating women will need to pre-register, and this service is provided at no cost to qualified participants, but is limited to 50 participants, ages 40 and older. These women will board the “Sisters Party Bus” from the STAR Center during the First Family of Health event to and from the Carol Milgard Breast Center. They will have the support of other women before, during, and after their mammogram.
This event is for the entire family. There is something for all ages. A variety of presentations and interactive demonstrations will be held, covering a wide range of topics for health and lifestyle concerns. Eating Well and Cooking on a Budget, Living Well with Chronic Disease. There will also be health screenings available for cholesterol and blood pressure, and free dental cleanings for kids. Back by popular demand is the seminar “Teen Girls Only”.
There are fun fitness activities for the family, with Walk Live for Life and the 911 dance, skipping rope with Nathaniel Jackson, hula hooping with Hoopsmiles, or getting moving with a Zumba class.
Cathy J. Bailey, vice president of the Bethlehem Baptist Church Ministry, believes that as the event has grown into the community, it has reached out to underserved segments of the community, by providing various health care education and services to those who wouldn’t normally have access. The more people that are served, the more amazing the event becomes.
Conference location: STAR Center Metro Parks, located at 3873 S. 66th Street Tacoma, WA 98409.
