Broadway Center presents the National Tour of Chicago

Chicago comes to Tacoma, at the Broadway Center! The national tour of the musical, Chicago, will be performed on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma. Chicago is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It’s a scandalous story about two women: Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly that takes place in the 1920s. With murder, speakeasies and dreams of stardom, the two women rise to fame through newspaper headlines!  It’s dangerous and glamorous, with incredible dancing and many memorable songs, like “All that Jazz”, “Mister Cellophane” and “Razzle Dazzle.”

In conjunction with this production, Broadway SIZZLE will take place on Saturday, August 31, to kick off the opening night celebrations for the 2013-14 Season, which is also the Broadway Center’s 30th Anniversary Season. Broadway Sizzle includes dinner and drinks on Broadway at 5:00 p.m., plus a ticket to the show in the B Tier / Main Floor (tickets for dinner-only are also available).  Broadway SIZZLE is presented by Broadway Center and Harbor Greens Market for a festive opening night that celebrates the bounty of the Pacific Northwest! Chef Dustin Joseph, formerly of Chambers Bay and Art House Cafe, will create a “Scratch American” upscale picnic to showcase all natural, sustainable Niman Ranch meats and local ingredients picked at the peak of the season. Enjoy lively entertainment, farm-fresh produce from Harbor Greens, craft brews, artisan cheeses, award-winning wines, and gourmet products of all kinds.

Chicago is a well-loved musical. It was one of the first productions that Lacey Leffler, marketing director for the Broadway Center, saw at the Broadway Center, as well as in New York. “I’m thrilled that we’re bringing it back for our 30th Anniversary Season.  It promises to start the season with plenty of “Razzle dazzle!” This show has everything that makes a brilliant Broadway musical – dancing, fame, scandal, and show-stopping songs.”

Some background on the story of Chicago, is that it’s based on the real 1924 Chicago murder case, that was transformed by reporter Maurine Watkins into a 1926 Broadway comedy of the same name. Two film versions were produced, including the 1942 release Roxie Hart, starring Ginger Rogers. Bob Fosse was persuaded to develop a musical version, with his signature dance stylings, by Gwen Verdon. Gewn was to play the accused murderess, Roxie Hart. Bob wrote the libretto in collaboration with famed musical team Fred Ebb and John Kander. The end result was a jazzy score and a memorable production. Gwen Verdon was joined by Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly in the 1975 Broadway premiere, which ran for 936 performances.
