The monthly Family Movie Matinee features a newly released DVD movie that favors family audiences is selected each month for a screening at the Tillicum American Lake Community Center’s Main Hall. Family movie matinees take place on the third Saturday of each month, at 1 pm. There are door prizes, including free toys for the younger children donated by the Community Center. Free pre-packaged popcorn and drinks are also available at this event. If the selected movie was a story from a book or book series, the library will have them available for checkout after the movie.
Jeanine Adams, community branch supervisor, commented: “This event is an important option for the public to enjoy a safe, free community event without having to travel a great distance (most participants walk). Since this event is sponsored by the Tillicum Pierce County Library, we are always interested in directing curiosity towards books. We hope the content of each movie will generate such curiosity either in the book from which the movie was inspired or from the topic of the movie. The best part of this event is to observe a captivated audience drawn into community response by what is taking place on the big screen. I know that interest has been stimulated when I witness this kind of engagement. The next best thing is having a member of the audience browse the book titles to find one that will enrich his/her movie watching experience.”
This program has become an anticipated community event among residents of Tillicum and Woodbrook. Members of the public either call or walk in and ask what each month’s movie title will be. Jeanine commented: “I believe the consistency involved in planning these movies caters to our community many of whom don’t have transportation to frequent local movie theaters. Our movies are usually enjoyed by all ages but generally cater to the young.”
The next family movie matinee takes place on Saturday, January 18, at 1 pm at the Tillicum American Lake Community Center’s Main Hall, located at 14916 Washington Ave SW. Lakewood, WA. Families and caregivers of children age 4 to 14 years of age are the intended audience, and pre-registration is not required.
