On Friday, September 16, 2011 the Goodyear Tire Center will have a fundraiser for Justin Ray all day long, and from 11 am to 3 pm there will be hotdogs, hamburgers, and soda sold for a $1 each to support Justin. Justin Ray, a 27 old husband and father of two, has been diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer. Bob Sealey, owner of Goodyear Tires for ten years, explained the story, “Justin Ray was over at Car Toys and we met at a networking function and that’s how we became friends. (This was probably about three years ago). Since then we have maintained contact for coffee or lunch. About two years ago, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent some treatment and later went into complete remission (no detection of cancer in his body) for about a year maybe longer. Then he went back to work at Car Toys, and called me up and we went to lunch. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and he’s only 27 years old. I asked him, “What can I do to help you?” Insurance is going to cover most of it but not all of it. He also said he was going to be in the hospital for three months and will have no income for the next three, four, or five months. He had a dinner at his house (a formal one) the last Saturday of August that raised some money [for his cause]. This would be an ideal situation that would really promote it to the community and ask the community to help raise money to have a “Justin Ray day”. I just picked tomorrow out of the hat…no special reason. I’ll take all proceeds on that day and they will all go to Justin…As well as sell regular hamburgers, hot dogs… make it really affordable everyone can spend a $1 and all that will go to Justin. So far… I’ve got a lot of response from people that will come to it that’s pretty much it, in a nutshell.
People can also give contributions to Justin through his Facebook site: http://goo.gl/KN1nR (case-sensitive) or people can just come here and make donations, too.”
When asked what he looked forward to most with the event, Bob replied, “Have a good time, barbecue…people coming around that haven’t been here for awhile or ones for the first time. Hang out have a burger, hot dog…kick back for an hour or two. Third thing, be promoting a good light to the community, this is who we are; giving back to the community and helping out…Not just a tire place taking people’s money for services…that’s really important to me.
Not to sound egotistical, I know we’re the best quality shop on South Hill and maybe Puyallup. My crew is dedicated to their careers, not just showing up for a paycheck and they are really into their jobs. They stay on top of their training and stay certified (ASE) Automotive Service Excellence, a national organization in order to be certified and people recognize that with quality mechanics that are ASE certified. I know that when people come here they’re gonna get their cars fixed right…No scare tactics in our sales approach or hard selling, we treat all customers with respect we’re honest and trustworthy that’s what we’re all about and have been about.”
Bob commented, “I’ve never done this before for anybody. I would do this again for somebody; it’d be great to see other businesses to step up when opportunities arise in this fashion where there’s a customer, friend, family, or employee that needs serious help to stand up and give them help. This is a way to do it.”
Bob Looney, an automotive technician at Goodyear Tire Center, expressed what he thought of the fundraiser, “In my opinion, it’s the first time that I’ve been in a shop that does it; I think it’s kinda neat helping somebody out.” When asked what he looked forward to most about the event, Bob Looney replied, “Hopefully there’s a big turn out and a lot of people show up for it…Hoping to accommodate them.”
When asked who he recommended attend the event, Bob Looney replied, “Everybody; just hoping a lot of people show up and that it turns out to be a great event, decent weather, and not raining…puts a damper on everything [the rain].” “Wide open to community…anybody that wants to come.” Bob Sealey commented. “We’re just one entity trying to help this guy. Car servicing; all proceeds and tires we sell will go to Justin also,” Bob Sealey added. Goodyear Tire Center is located at 11904 Meridian East, Puyallup, Washington 98373 and their website is http://www.puyallupgoodyear.com/
