Six-time Grammy® Winners ‘Asleep at the Wheel’ to Perform at America’s Car Museum Opening June 2

Route 66 runs from Chicago to LA, but Asleep at the Wheel, the country band who helped make the road famous, will instead be traveling from Austin to Tacoma to headline a free concert at the June 2 grand opening of LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM).

“We wanted a musical act for our grand opening that had wide appeal and Asleep at the Wheel certainly fits the bill,” said David Madeira, ACM president and CEO. “With guitarist and lead singer Ray Benson and the rest of ‘The Wheel’ playing all their hits, the mix of country music and all the grand opening festivities will make June 2 a day to remember.”

The concert will be held at 5 p.m. on ACM’s 3.5-acre Haub Family Field, which lies directly adjacent to the 165,000-square foot museum. Tacoma native and recent “The Voice” contestant Kim Archer will be the opening act. It will cap day-long grand opening festivities, which include go-cart and slot-car racing, driving simulators, local food vendors and a free outdoor car show.

Formed in 1970, Asleep at the Wheel was named the Country Music Band of the Year by Rolling Stone in 1977. The Texas based group has produced nine albums that reached the Billboard Country Music Top-50 in four different decades and has won six Grammy awards. ACM is dedicated to preserving and highlighting America’s love affair with the auto. Sitting on a nine-acre campus overlooking the Foss Waterway, the four-level facility will host concerts, collector car shows and drive-in movies in the coming year, and is already serving as the site for conventions, corporate meetings and events.

State Farm Presents LeMay – America’s Car Museum, set for a June 2, 2012 opening in downtown Tacoma, Wash., explores how the automobile has fulfilled a distinctive role at the core of the American experience and shaped our society. The spacious Museum with rotating exhibits is designed to be the centerpiece for automotive history as well as an educational center and library. The campus, located adjacent to the Tacoma Dome, also contains a 3.5-acre show field, theatre, café, banquet hall and meeting facilities.
